ARiSE
Agroecology for Resilience, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship
Agroecology for Resilience, Sustainability and Entrepreneurship or ARiSE is a platform to bring together stakeholders, innovators and communities to foster sustainable development and climate resilience through agroecology. The project’s objectives focus on the establishment of an urban / peri-urban food council and developing a food strategy for the Chennai metropolitan region through a network of stakeholders across sectors of academia, praxis, civil society, entrepreneurs and government.
To that end, a workshop was organised in November 2024 with practitioners and experts of Sustainable Urban and Peri-urban farming practices in attendance. Presentations by the invitees spoke of their own personal experiences in running commercial and semi commercial farming ventures with a wide range of organic agricultural practices.
After Q&A, attendees engaged in 2 interactive sessions, first to identify areas of policy gaps and other thematic areas relevant for fostering sustainable Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture and a second one post lunch to brainstorm on the role of the government and the practitioners to help protect and promote sustained food growing practices in and around Chennai.
